A wedding day is filled with moments that photographs can document—but a live wedding painting turns one of those moments into an original work of art.

For my own wedding at Sheraton Petaling Jaya, I created a live wedding painting in my signature medium: fine felt painting with soft surrealist elements.

I wanted the painting to capture more than the appearance of the day. I wanted it to hold something of the atmosphere, emotions and story surrounding the celebration.

Working directly on felt, I painted the wedding scene live during the reception while guests watched the artwork gradually take shape.

My approach combines traditional portrait and event painting with my distinctive textile-based technique. Rather than simply reproducing a photograph, I use subtle surrealist details and symbolic elements to create a painting that feels personal to the couple.

Live wedding painting requires a different approach from creating a studio portrait.

The painting has to develop in real time, in the middle of a moving celebration. Guests may stop to watch, photographs and speeches are taking place around me, and the final artwork needs to be completed within the event itself.

For me, this is part of what makes live wedding painting special.

The painting becomes a record not only of how the wedding looked, but of where and when it was created.

My paintings are created directly on premium felt rather than traditional canvas.

I combine fabric paint, acrylic painting and selected embellishments to create a tactile surface with subtle dimensional details. The softness of the felt also gives the finished work a distinctive quality that differs from conventional wedding portraits.

My soft surrealist approach allows meaningful details to be incorporated into the artwork without overwhelming the wedding scene.

A couple might find a meaningful symbol hidden within the composition, a detail incorporated into the clothing, or an unexpected element within the surrounding landscape.

The result is a fine art wedding painting that is personal to the couple and unique to their celebration.

Every element was considered as part of the larger story: the couple, the setting, the atmosphere and the small details that made the day theirs.
